I had high hopes for a lightweight 15ah shorai motorcyle battery, but it seems it cant handle the constant discharge/recharge and after 150 miles of us it will no longer hold a charge. So...,

Those tha have the elite 5 hdi, what battery has performed the best for you?

I run a 7 ah garage door opener battery I got at home depot for about $20.  On my elite 7hdi I'm good for a day.  There are better options out there for more $ though.  I just replace it every few years as/if needed.

I get mine from an online store that sells "wheelchair" batteries. They cost around $20 for a 7 Ah battery. With all these it helps to have a good quality battery charger that does not overcharge the battery and to keep the battery topped off. Having a battery sit with a partial charge is not good for it. I recharge mine after each use with a quality 2/4/6 amp charger set to charge at 2 amps. Slower charging is better for maximizing the life of any battery.

The most recharge cycles will be with a lithium-ion battery but these need special chargers and are really overkill for a fish finder.

I believe some of the reason for Li-ion is weight/size reduction as well as # of cycles.
