Hi all,

My 9yr son frequently reminds me about the one time that we flipped our tandem on our 1st ocean voyage.  Although he has gone out with me since, he sure not letting that memory fade.  Does an outrigger make sense in my case?  I do not see it being used often nor do I see it listed for sale in many places.  While I can use anything that will increase his comfort level on the yak, I like to get some feedback before committing. Any advice will be appreciated.

Sounds like he likes giving you a hard time.  If you can't find one for sale and won't use it as often as you think it may not be the purchase for you.  You can always do a DYI outrigger project.  There are plenty of those on youtube and most of the parts for it are at Home Depo.

I have a set of spring creek stabilizers I will sell should you choose that route.

Tell him that everybody swims at one time or another and you  were just getting it out of the way.
Plus it makes him a better and more prepared kayaker.
IMO the outrigger lessens your skills as a kayaker. (Feel free to flame me here)
It's like a crutch. If you always rely on it you won't really develop the skills to go out in the big blue w/o it.
I never used one when I'd take my son ab diving on my tandem and he was only 7 years old.
I'd anchor up and make him sit in the kayak while I dove. And I'd go in less than ideal conditions. IMO he's a great kayak fisherman and very competent ocean kayaker as a result of early training.
Forget the training wheels. He's already been on the bike. Just develop his skills.

No. I have seen kayaks with outrigger flip over. This Cobra Marauder was upside down at HMB last weekend.

A better alternative is to develop you and your son's kayaking skills. Learn about the primary and secondary stability characteristics of your kayak. And learn how to brace to keep you from going over next time.

I remember that (sunrise colored?) kayak last week on my way in. Noticed the motor and it was pretty quick. Was fishing kinda close to the shallow reef.

Yea, on our way in, Tim, Quan and I saw that kayak flipped over and he couldn't get it upright due to the outrigger + outboard motor so he was just sitting on the upside down kayak waiting for harbor patrol.  Tim tried to assist but harbor patrol arrived few minutes later.

Looks like that outrigger didn't really help much once that kayak tipped over enough.

On a side note, does harbor patrol charge for stuff like that?

If you ain't first, you're last.

What do you mean? $149 after your initial rescue? Or you can sign up prior?

The price I quoted was from Boat U.S. towing service for its members. Not sure how much non members are charged.
