I live in Lodi and was hoping to find a place not too far away (1.5-2 hrs) to fish for lings from the yak?  Maybe somewhere near SF bay?  Anyone have any suggestions?  It would be my first time specifically targeting lings.  Appreciate any help!

Where's a good place to launch there?  I've been reading about Bean Hollow and Pigeon Point.....are those the main launch spots in that area?

Pigeon Point is a good launch for beginners, paddle north of the light house about 1/2 to mile north of it.

Well I wanted to report back and also maybe get some advice.  Launched out of Pigeon Point today with a buddy on a quest to catch some lings.  Hit a lot of traffic coming from Lodi so didn't get on the water til about 11am.

Anyway, worked north from Pigeon Point for two miles.  Unfortunately, not one fish to show for it.  (I hooked one ling and got it to the yak before it got off the hook. Buddy had no bites at all.)

I'm sure it was something I did (or didn't do) versus the area because I've seen some of the photos other users have posted of their fish from this spot so I know there's fish there.

We tried a variety of different jig-type lures.  (The one I got a hookup on was a 12 oz lead jig head with a 10" root beer colored rubber tail on it, but with only one hookup it's hard to know if that was a good setup or just luck.)

Honestly I wasn't sure how far off the shore we should be or in what depth.  I think our depth varied from 7'-25', but was mostly in the 12'-17' range.

Any suggestions for how far off the shore or what depth we SHOULD have been at?  Any other suggestions would be welcome to.  It was a tough day with a long drive, a BUNCH of lost lures (basically lost every ling lure I brought due to getting caught up on the bottom), and zero fish to show for it.

Willing to give it another shot but need to be better prepared.  Thanks for any advice you care to share!!

3-4 oz is all you usually need for weight with jig heads. I use 6-10oz irons on occasion.  Lighter than you used will help with the lost gear issue.  I use 6.5" Big Hammer swimbaits almost always. Scampis work good though. I fish from 30-100 feet most of the time. Just depends o the area.

If your using treble hooks switch them out to singles. Less snag and easier to recover. I think I catch just as many lings.

I'm surprised you didn't get any rockfish on your teaser fly - assuming you were using one. A rattrap ( stinger hook) setup with a whole squid or Sardine/ Herring will almost always bring in a Ling
Your original post said, Lodi.  Distance wise and ease of launch, you might be better off at Bodega Bay or Timber Cove
