I just heard about using choked herring to troll for salmon.  It looks nice and simple with the benefits of plug cut without the hassle.   Has anyone tried it?

Heard about it on the radio while on the salmon grounds. A CSer posted a report about it and it worked for him that day.

That's where I saw it.  It is like the way I rig a skating dry fly for steelhead which gives it a wake ( but not a spin).  I like using less hardware, though it must take some good swivels to keep the line from twisting.  I don't know if it will give enough action at kayak trolling speed, but will try it out at Fort Bragg this weekend.

Thanks for that. I might try that out of Van Damme this Saturday.

I bought a pack of herring from fishery supplies and I'm ready to choke it. I hope it works!

Better have some awesome swivels, otherwise you will have the twist from hell to deal with.
I have a home made lure (not by me) that looks like and performs like that.

American made Sampo swivels take care of any twist.

Tried out choked herring, trolling at FB yesterday.  I tried different amounts of bend in the herring and found that a fairly large bend gave great action in the water, even at slow speeds, but ended up twisted occasionally.  The chrome  hits I got were  like an express train.  Simple to rig, but I need a couple of  ball bearing swivels with it, and care when letting line out at first.  It is hard to tell when it twists, so I need to check my line more often.  Used blue tray herring and 4/0 hooks, though 5/0 seemed OK too.
I think it would work great for mooching with a good swell too.  I'm going to stick with it.
