Think of it as a long-term investment. It will not "pay for itself" immediately. And it's a much better investment if you can find the molds at a garage sale for like $5 each.

+1. Specially when you lose tons of rigs rockfishing like I do.

I could see how it would be satisfying if you tied an awesome fly or created some piece of art out of natural materials or something. But lings will bite anything flashy. Doesn't seem like it would be too satisfying pouring ling jigs...

....yet here I am still looking at molds haha.

What would you guys rccomended for a good starter mold, maybe two, for lings and rock fishing. The diamond bars? What mold option? The three varieties around 1oz, or just stick to all 3oz?

1 oz is way too light in my opinion. 3 is a pretty small too. When I do use them I use between 4-10 oz.

LMAO

If its in that range the molds only come with one size in them. So which weight is a good average to get?

I hate Irons. I loose one every drop. J/k  6-8 would be my guess, ask the experts. ATD catches greenling on 10's.

Average would be 4oz. 6oz if the drift is a little fast. If you require more than that, the drift is probably too fast and you shouldn't be out there in the first place. On a very calm, lake-like water, 2oz is my minimum.

If course it's a different story when you're in a party boat. You'd want your line straight as possible to avoid tangles with others. Also, at times they would take you to deep water. You'd want minimum of 6oz to get your lure down as fast as it can.

Do you run treble hooks on your irons. I change all mine to single hooks.

Yes and no, sometimes, occaisionally. I lose them no matter what. That's why I almost always fish Big Hammers.

Someone needs to invent how to make braided line. Now that would save me some money seeing as I normally come back a couple hundred feet shorter each trip.

I feel stupid. I just picked up different sinkers when I got home. 1 oz. LOL. All the ones i've had and used were at least 6 probably 8's. Good call.

How do big hammers save money/lost rigs?

As far as single hooks or treble, big difference? I've only ever used trebles, I imagine singles wouldn't get as many hooked.

Single hooks still catch fish and the bottom gets fewer hook ups.

I bounce the bottom a lot, but the BH does not fall in holes as easy.
