Thanks Weimer.... and all.  Yes this is the final Eurovan imported. V6 24-valve front engine FWD.  Not the boxer rear engine of Vanagon Era (I had one of those too, as well as a 74 van.  And, too many bugs and ghias to list)

Love the relative luxury and sophistication but beyond my abilities to actually work on anymore, with all the computers and stuff.

I'm familiar with Go Westy, but they do not always have rebuilt transmissions.  they are also very pricey, but do provide warranty for motors and trannies.

I may contact the Menlo Park guy for a consult if nothing else.  Thanks

I've owned many classic beetles and type 3's. Whenever I needed to find any thing about them (I mean everything), www.thesamba.com had the answer. It's a pretty extensive VW forum. I'm sure someone there can lead you in the right direction. Can't go wrong with that site.

haha.  I know.  Its a special vehicle for sure.

already at the shop with motor and tranny dropped.  It's ugly. Despite meticulous service oil changes etc.  We are thinking a new rebuilt could be most cost-effective.  the transmission has been making funny noises for years and showing notjust shavings but even a couple mm chunks in the screen on fluid changes.

thinking I might just go for new tranny at the same time since everything is on the floor right now.

I admire and trust my mechanic (he fishes), but VW's are not his expertise.  Trying to get a handle on things.

Really I am trying to have enough of an understanding to convince my wife of the wisest move.  (Which means I need to figure out what is most wise.)

Allen:

Don't invest in a new tranny until you have my guy look at it. He might have a spare. Also, I'd use someone that knows VWs -specifically Eurovans. They're a special beast. Check your PMs
Was turned on to skunkasaurus Klas myself and our first meeting was he drove to my house and checked out the Mooch Coach. Been going there ever since. Thanks skunkasaurus. He is very good at answering messages. For instance my lovely wife was driving the van last week when a building came out and grabbed the front headlight. Already repaired with parts in hand at his place. Oh by the way the building is claiming damage and that a couple of bricks were displaced. Really!?
