I see they are doing well out of Eureka for Pacific halibut...250ft, fish up to 50 pounds. Anybody here have good info out of Shelter Cove? Wondering if they are in range of a kayak and good weather. And....what type of tackle and bait? Braided line would get to the bottom with less weight,... herring or large anchovies on a 60lb mono leader, with two mustads?
In early June I am planning on a one week camp trip to Shelter Cove,...diving, spearing, salmon, rockfish, and would like to try halibut. Any info would be great, Ron

Check out gear by B2Squid - they're based in Humboldt and known for their halibut gear.

Another good one is Redwood Coast Spreader Bars - up and coming new superstar, especially for halibut, and also based in Humboldt.

To my knowledge, most of the Pacific halibut caught from kayaks in California have been at the Gimme Shelter event weekend including pre-fishing and the days following the tourney.  It's possible that Matanaska, another Humboldt member, has surpassed that number up in Trinidad, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find other accounts of them caught south of Oregon by kayak.  The ones that I know of caught by kayak at Shelter Cove have generally been in 50 to 120 feet of water.  Shelter Cove is unique for that opportunity, but we just completed thousands of hours of hook time at the Cove for zero Pacifics this year, so the bite may be off...

Best of luck.   :smt001

Great! I checked out B2Suid and Redwood Coast Spreader Bars. The spreader bars are becoming popular fast up north. I have seen them used in Baja for many years but not Northern California...until recently.
Maybe the halibut bite will pick-up or start at Shelter Cove soon...maybe not. But there is always other fish to target. Beside herring the large jigs offered by B2Suid were new to me but looked good. Maybe also the largest swim baits sold, tipped with squid, with enough lead to hit the bottom in deeper water would be good
I have seen several halibut taken a few years ago at Shelter Cove but did not ask where they were taken, nor how deep. Maybe some info can be picked up around the launch. Any more information would be great. Thanks, Ron

Fish between small reefs on an out going tide. All halibut love those food funnels. Lay there an wait like some one who just ordered a pizza

Yeah, B2Squid - I had a typo.   :smt003

Most of the 'buts that come in at the Cove are on very flat days where the charters or others could run up to Punta Gorda - too far for a kayak.

Last year was known to be slow up at Gorda too.

Sounds like there is a good bite out of Eureka according to USA Fishing.
