Saw many of these; some were quite sizable...  What's its name and has anyone eaten one of these?

It's a Kelp Crab.  Google for more info.

Cabezon love them, and so do I.

I've never eaten one though.  I just think they're cool.

This is a Sheep Crab that I caught while tied to some kelp on squid back in 2011.  CPR'd it and showed it to Ly of Ly's Sporting and Fishing goods.  He said that it has sweet meat and would have closed his store to drive to get it.  It was really heavy.

Ly is right.  The shell on this crab is hard like rock but the meat is sweet and the roe is...delicious!

The shell is very thick and durable.  The meat has a different texture from dungies or rock/red crabs but is sweeter then both.  The "mustard" is almost always a golden color and intensely sweet in a seafood-y way without any bitterness.

The downside is they don't have much meat in the legs.  The shell is very hard.  The claws hold the most meat but the texture can be almost mealy.  It's hard to explain, but the strands of meat can separate which makes it seem crumbly.

The spider crab is similar but all that crud growing on their backs make them unappetizing.  The best way to clean them is to power wash them up close to get as much of that crud off as possible.
