Hung my Vaughan

 
  I hung my Vaughan Axehead toda.  Took some filing and sanding to get head to fit o to tthe haft, but I got it on eventually with some persuasion.  I still need to shape the haft extending out top of handle.  Found an old metal tiny wedge cleaned it up and hammered it home into top of haft.  Treated the handle with some teak oil, (All I had on hand)
  While handling my new Axe, I realized it is not all that comfortable in my hand haven't hit any wood with it yet.  Maybe tomorrow I'll test it out.
  I did find yet another hatchet, this one was buried in my storage shed.  Its handle looks pretty dry, so I plan to sand it up a bit, then get a proper coating for it,  maybe stain it first?  Not sure of brand, nothing visable on it just yet, I'll get to cleaning up its head soon.  I'm liking this new found hatchet for my truck beater over the Vaughan I just hung.  It feels better in my hand!

I have a old axe and maul that need new handles.  Will do them as a project at some point this year.  Hey, where are the pics!?

  the white handled axe is the Vaughan I just hung.  The dirty handled hatchet, is the one I just found in my shed, and the last one, with the red paint, I remember buying it 3-4 years ago, it got put in shed and forgot about, till last night.  I remember buying it strictly for camping. I'll have to hit the red one with a file to help its profile, then put it to the stone to hone it up.  Actually all of my axes will get a sharpening here in next few days!
  The Vaughan's edge is pretty good right now, so it'll take a lot less to get it sharp.
The dirty handled hatchet, has a nice nick in its edge. Shouldn't take much to get rid of it.
  Looks like I might have 2 truck beaters now.

 
  Apparently, I might have a small safety issue ( Not recognized due to inexperience) with procedure I used to "Hang the Vaughan head". It was brought to my attention that the lack of gap in the " Kerf'" ( The gap for the wedge) could result in weakness at the base which could result it the head snapping off! Now, since I didn't get a warm fuzzy with the fit in my hand, I might be trying to remove the handle.  This won't be easy after the pounding it got to seat
  I suspect if I can't get it off, some drilling and maybe a torch I'll be involved.
My mistake happened when I didn't remove enough wood from the handle to allow the handle to go into the head and still have gap remaining for the wood wedge. Live and learn.
