I know a few of you here hit Benicia for Salmon. I do not think they have really entered that part of the system yet but how do you guys attack them in this area?

Are they still feeding when they enter this part of the bay where they will go after bait and dodgers or an Apex, or is it more of an aggression/reaction bite like up the sac? Is Mooching ever successful in this area?

The area is close to my house so I would like to try and get my fist kayak  salmon in the area this year.

I have spent some time in the area and know the tides can get pretty aggressive if you do not time things right. Any other hazards to keep in mind?

Best,
Phil

I have fished from the shore up there a few times. Everyone seems to throw spinners. I have seen PB troll for them.  The salmon run is later in the year right before they start to head for the rivers.

Most of the Salmons caught in Benicia were at the State Park and First Street but the bankies are not very friendly to yakers/boaters who fish in the same general area!  I trolled the straight many times without success.

We paddle 5 man outriggers in Benicia 3 times a week. I've been on the water where the tide and waves can easily flip a 1 man kayak. Of course, this is when it's raining and winds are up 10-15mph plus incoming tides.

There are plenty of days where waters are more than suitable for trolling on a kayak, just be careful and stay away from Vallejo HWY 80 bridge (forgot name of bridge)... This is where current is strongest.

Of course, when you time it right during slack tides... It's quite peaceful and beautiful.

As far as fishing being productive, you might be better off catching striped bass or sturgeon in that area.
