The usual haunt in Konocti bay, north of Richmond park, proved to me again that it isnt just the easy access and a Bar and Grill that keeps me coming back.
The schooling baitfish were swarming the points, but there was no sign of busting. Still, I had to go back to the rip bait that did so well before and caught nothing.  Switched to a shadrap with a slow retreive and nothing. Thought that the bass may be burned out on the baitfish diet and switched to throwing senkos and jigs (with trailers) and it turned on.  The moon was amazing and the bass (plus alot of other creatures) started exploding on the surface.
Even though I was catching fish consistantly I couldnt resist to go with the top water buzz and the zara spook and I caught nothing.  Must have been operator error. The victims were in the common 14-16" range, but lost a much larger fish due to some arrogance, complacency, and a nancy boy hook set.  But im not bitter just going back tonight.

Sweet catch!  Must be so fun to paddle at night.  Was ambient lunar illumination sufficient to operate safely?  Do you use a headlamp or anything?

I always have the headlamp at the ready, but I try not to use it and save my natural night vision. A headlamp with a green or red light can help preserve your night vision too. One of the challenges of fishing at night is when using a bait that requires watching your line on the surface. The full moon makes it nice out there but you still have to be careful when casting towards the shallows/ shadows or you will have to spoil your targeted areas.
Went back out yesterday and had some success but I wasnt able to stay out as late and I think i missed the real "prime time".  Letting the tournament PBs have the lake this weekend but next week ill be back in "the playground"

NIce going.

As far as night vision goes: REI carries a headlamp by  German company, ' Petzl' that makes 'bomber' climbing gear including headlamps, that has a flip-down red/orange filter with three levels of illumination. Its called the stealth or something, I bought on a year ago or so--great investment--full bright white and night-vison-preserving red/orange with a simple flip up of the filter when I need it.
