I live near the Sacramento River and very much want to kayak fish there.  It's a bit intimidating and I want to make sure I do so in the safest way.  I have fished from the bank for years and have noticed at times it's like a pond and at other times it's got a very strong current.  So what do you think?  Would it be safer to kayak during slack tide when the tides are small (small tidal coefficient).  Or would it be safer to go when there is a big high tide coming in.  Thanks for your help, and if anyone wants to go with me to make it even safer let me know.  I will be putting in around the Clarksburg area.
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

The current can rip through there.  Always be aware of your paddling capabilities.

The tide can cause your kayak to be a little squirrelly and push you through little eddies, but overall I don't consider it unsafe to be on top of.  But add in factors such as wind, boat traffic, floating debris, etc and there's a different effect on safety.

Generally speaking, you want to paddle the opposite direction that the tide will be pushing you on your return trip, so you don't have to fight the tide the whole way home.  So let's say you have a big outgoing tide, then you might want to paddle upstream at slack and ride the outgoing home.

Be safe!  The AR and the Port are also two good local options for you.
