Abalone may not be taken or possessed aboard any boat, vessel, or floating device in the
water containing SCUBA or surface-supplied air.
It appears as stated above as far as having tanks in a car is ok. It says boat, vessel or floating device IN THE WATER, not on land. I usually freedive first than blow bubbles incase the wind come up, hate chasing my float.

I finally got a response from DFG. It's in email format below.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my inquiry.

Hello Antonio,

Actually, the regulation states that you cannot take abalone using scuba or surface supplied air, AND you may not take or possess abalone aboard any “boat, vessel, or floating device in the water” containing scuba or surface supplied air. There is no prohibition against storing scuba and abalone in your vehicle on land.

Remember to keep your scuba gear off your boat when you are taking or attempting to take abalone, and when you have abalone on board (in possession), and you should be fine.

yours,

Subject: Abalone Diving question

Hello,

Is it legal to have Scuba tanks in your vehicle while transporting abalone?

Ex. You go abalone diving in the normal legal manner. When you finish free diving you return to your vehicle to place your tagged abs in the cooler.

You then grab your scuba gear and gun and go spearfishing. At the end of your scuba dive you return to your vehicle to stow your fish.

Can you be cited for having tanks in your vehicle in the parking lot or at a check point while driving home????

I've had several discussions about this and get opposing responses.
Can someone show me in the regs where this is stated?????

I only see in the regs that it is illegal to take abalone while using scuba tanks.

Thanks
Antonio

Print a copy and keep it in your dive gear,

I'm going to print several copies. I'm going to keep one in multiple vehicles and in my license container.
