I think rockfish are closed to boaters until July 1.  Are you diving?

I'll be diving again sat in sonoma.  Haven't decided where yet, but the weather looks about perfect.

I dislike van damme.  If you're driving that far, you'll do better at mackerricker or one of the other spots.  Fort ross is 2 hours closer and has 10x the abalone population.  (not to mention the motherload of rockfish)

If you want fish before july, you'll have to shoot em or catch them from shore.  Right now the big momma lings are still around, the spearos are sticking some hogs in the 20-30lb range.

Van Damme IS burnt, and Mc Kericher is also heavily impacted.  Mc Kericher is picked over and really exposed, always GWS sightings off of tenmile beach.  Crabbing is great though off tenmile.  I have tried for halibut there many times while soaking crab gear, but never scored.  Abs are everywhere else in Mendo though.  When you come up CP ive me a buzz and I will try and show you some spots.

I don't know of a spot where there aren't regular GW sightings.  I just avoid the couple places that have recurring attacks.

I scuba dove at mackerricker and the place is paved with abalone in the deeper areas.  Ethan shot through a rockfish and his spear got stuck in an abalone blowhole...
