Hi everyone.
I have a new Wilderness 115X and a few fishing poles but I'm pretty green at kayaking and fishing. I'm wondering if anyone out there has or knows of a group or someone that goes out with novices. I'm interested in lake, river and ocean fishing. I would love to invest in a crab trap and go crabbing too. I've gone kayaking in Lake Berryessa, Lake Sonoma but have been unlucky fishing. Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Rob

Welcome to NCKA, Rob.  Sounds like you're well on your way to finding success and joy in the sport.  My advice is to read as much as you can in the forums here - safety, fitness, preparedness, knowledge of weather, water and other environmental factors...etc. are all discussed at length in numerous threads here, and those issues need to be addressed prior to becoming a fish catching machine, IMO.   :smt001

There are many events, gatherings and smaller hookups where you can meet other club members and start gaining knowledge and experience at a more rapid and efficient pace than you could by yourself.  You should also consider taking a paddling and safety class or hiring a guide.

Best of luck - see you around~

agreed. The price of a single intro to paddling class is well worth it down the road. You'll learn proper paddling technique and self and assisted rescues. Fishing is the easiest part of kayak fishing.

I was considering such class myself. Any recommendation on where? I was considering Kayak Connection in Santa Cruz or Aquan Sports in San Carlos

I am not sure but I think ravensblack does some private or group fishing instructions tours.

Welcome dude. There are some really talented folks in Sonoma County so it shouldn't be hard to find some folks to fish with.
When I first started kayak fishing I spent a lotta time in Spring lake in Santa Rosa. Used to be bass in there.
Good luck!
Matt

hey there, welcome to the madness. I work with kayak connection and we offer many thorough intro to kayaking classes, one that focuses just on sit on top kayaks. it is a far drive from sonoma, but who doesnt want to come to santa cruz? I also teach kayak fishing clinics during rock cod season that have been very helpful for people new to ocean fishing from a kayak.

Wow! Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm definitely going to check this site as often as I can.  Santa Cruz sounds like lots of fun. "Squidbly", do you have a website address so I can check out times and prices for classes?
Thanks
Rob

When fishing preparation  is everything. Read up on your target species of the day in addition to rigging. Safety 1st!

Welcome, we as community and brotherhood we emphasize on safety first then fishing. I went on a guided trip with Bushy (allen) in Santa Cruz that gave me confidence on the salt. I love everyone here as they held my hands when I was starting. I tell you this much YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE.
