Very Cool info, a long journey to end up on your table, imagine that little fingerling dropped in near Redding and running the gauntlet from river, to bay, to sea and surviving it all. Heck it had to pass within a few miles of my house to get out there.

Kinda puts thing in perspective.

Totally cool info - thanks for posting, Doug.  I've never sent them in but wish I would've!  Maybe this year...   :smt001

This year it was all by e-mail. The biologist gives you a tag when he collects the head then you send an email to the address on the tag with a specific tag number in the subject line.  You can do it that same day.  Then they send an email with the head tag info when they have compiled all their data. Pretty slick and painless.

Finally got my letter.

Dear Howard Suzuki,

The Ocean Salmon Project (OSP) of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife would like to

sincerely thank you for cooperating with our field samplers. The adipose fin-clipped salmon you

caught on 4/18/2013, whose head was collected by port sampler Sherrie in Moss Landing,

contained a microscopic coded-wire tag (CWT). Information retrieved from your CWT includes:

Headtag: 96205

CWT Code: 068748

Species: Chinook

Brood year & run: 2010 Spring

Hatchery: Feather River Hatchery

Release site: Boyds Pump Ramp

Release date: 4/26/2011

# salmon tagged with same CWT code: 1,165,155

In 2013, Department staff sampled over 135,000 Chinook salmon during the monitoring of

recreational and commercial ocean salmon fisheries in California. Statewide, approximately

17% of these fish had their adipose fin clipped, indicating that the salmon contained a CWT.

More than 23,200 salmon heads were collected and processed during 2013. The large number

of heads collected this year is due to the State’s Constant Fractional Marking (CFM) program

which has marked at least 25% of all Chinook hatchery production in California state and federal

salmon hatcheries since 2007. The CFM program allows fisheries managers and salmon

biologists to better determine ocean salmon harvest rates, salmon stock distributions, and the

contribution of hatchery-produced salmon to fisheries and spawner escapement.

For additional information regarding the 2013 ocean salmon fisheries or the upcoming 2014

management schedule, please visit www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/oceansalmon.asp or call the ocean

salmon regulation hotline (707) 576-3429.

Again, we thank you for your cooperation.
