I was awakened early this morning by Amex credit card fraud division.  My Amex card was compromised and being used to make purchases from QVC and Walmart.com.  Pretty amazing how fast Amex figures this stuff out and cancels the card.  I'm sure the algorithms used to spot suspicious activity are pretty complex but shopping early on a Sunday morning at retailers I have never patronized must light up all of the red lights very quickly.  No loss incurred by me or Amex and a new card is on the way.  It seems like internet shopping with a stolen card would be difficult to accomplish considering the fact that a delivery address would be required to get the goods.  This is the second time this card has been compromised but there's no way to know how it happened.  I guess this is pretty common.  Damn thieves!

My Capital One card shut down for fraud protection last week on the second "uncharacteristic" purchase. A fish measuring device, diet Rockstar, and $40 worth of gas. How could they not know it was me  :smt002. I am glad they are looking out for me.

My credit union put a hold on any payments last year from August 8, until such time as I called in to confirm a series of purchases for 2 weeks afterward. On August 8, I had made an online purchase from a fishing boat halfway down Baja. The purchases were for repeat purchases for items; however, puchases originating from Mexico raised a lot of red flags.

My card got hacked right after the Steve Moyer Tourney in '09. The thieves tried to figure out the three digit code on the back by attempting multiple Netflix rentals. After the third failed attempt my card was turned off and I was notified.

I think the gas stations on I5 are big business for card hackers.

I was traveling a lot for racing a few years back. I fueled up in Sac, Bakersfield, and when I stopped in Palm Springs my card would not work. The CC company told me an easy way for them to spot fraud is fuel purchases on the same day in different areas. Got it straightened out and was able to keep on my way.

a few years ago i was on my way to Tahoe and i stopped to get gas about 7 AM used my AMEX then I went snow boarding about 2 PM as I was entering the bar for a beer and a slice of pizza my phone rand and it was AMEX asking if i was authorizing a purchase of a 55" TV, a DVD player and a game console in Arizona I said not of course.
they told me that after i charge 50.00 for fuel they used my card numbers to charge a bag of chips and a candy bar in the same station then about 2 hrs later someone made a duplicate card and used it in Arizona, they reversed the charges
