Hey all I wanted to pass this along in case any of you wanted to stay up to date and see what is going on with Team USA for the 2014 World Speerfisng Championships in Lima Peru. I also wanted to note that the 3 man team is made up 3 of our very own local Norcal divers Dan Silvera, Herold Gibson and Alex Reynoud. Lets wish these guys luck, The USA could not have picked any better divers than these 3 cause they truly are awesome at what they do when spearing. Below is the link.

Just received this from Alex,

Good afternoon,

I would like to thank you in advance for your consideration of being an important part of my fundraising for the 2014 US World Spearfishing Championships.

It is my goal to fundraiser from February through October to assist with the significant expenses associated with preparing for the World Competition.  These expenses range from event fees, lodging, boat fuel and the large costs of employing captains for 3 weeks of pre-tournament scouting.  The World Competition is being hosted in Lima, Peru from October 22-27, 2014.

The “Big Fish Open” is an opportunity to provide your support as a business sponsor, bring your golf game and be part of this unique event.  All sponsors of the Big Fish Open will be featured on our website at www.usworldspearfishingteam.com and all the details for golf and sponsorship are attached as a pdf.

How do you qualify for Team USA & the World Spearfishing Championship?

The qualifying process for Team USA is cumulative points total from two US National Spearfishing Championships scheduled prior the World Championships.  This included the 2012 Nationals hosted in Albion, California and the 2013 Nationals hosted in Newport, Rhode Island.  The top 3 divers earned a position on the US National Team.

What is the World Spearfishing Championship?

C.M.A.S. (Confederation Mondiale des Activities Subaquatiques) sponsors a World Spearfishing Championship every two years and usually limits participation to the top 20 of its member countries.  CMAS is a worldwide organization for underwater sports and has approximately 35 countries as members.  Each World Spearfishing Championship is typically held at a different dive location around the World, i.e. Chile in 2004 / Portugal in 2006 / Venezuela in 2008 / Croatia in 2010 / Spain in 2012 / Peru in 2014.  This year it will be held in Lima, Peru on the 22-27th of October, 2014.

What happens at a World Spearfishing Championship?

The Worlds are a 2-day championship where divers harvest fish for about 7 hours per day.  Each day, the diving is done at a different location.  Typically, 40 countries attempt to qualify to compete at the World Championships and often when there are too many teams want to participate.  When a high level of participation is demanded, regional qualifiers for the World Championships are hosted per Continent.  The America’s Qualifier is the Pan-American Spearfishing Championship, hosted last year in September, 2013 in Miami, Florida.

The World Championships are boat-based meets and each team is allowed to have three divers hunting on three separate boats.  The Championships are run somewhat like a mini-Olympics where there are opening ceremonies and a big closing banquet.  It is expected that over a thousand people will attend the opening ceremony in Peru, where each team has their own national uniform.  At the opening event there is a parade of Nations where each country carries their nations’ flag.

Thank you again for the support,
If you have any questions or would like to be a part of my event, please contact me directly.
