Thanks in advance for your help...

I think I'm gonna need a cart.  I'd love to learn from your experience what works best.

Priorities:
1) Breaks down easy
2) Strong and reliable
3) Good for all terrain, including sand.
4) Easy to use solo.

I don't mind paying retail so I can return it if it doesn't work.

So far, this looks nice:  http://www.rei.com/product/883360/sea-to-summit-sit-on-top-kayak-cart

You're going to hear these two answers...   :smt003

1.  Use the "SEARCH" function in the upper right corner of the webpage.  Most questions such have theses have been asked/discussed in depth.  Not saying it to be a dick, there's just a lot of good info available... and a lot of questions you didn't even think to ask are answered in the posts.

2.  Just spend the money now and get the Wheeleez beach cart (big wheels).  If you continue kayak fishing, you'll go through different brands until you come to this conclusion (just like we all did).  It's the cart of choice for a reason.  You can modify it with some PVC piping to have the Outback sit on it a little better.

If you can use REI's member discount, it's an attractive price.

Thanks for the recommendations.  Wheeleez it is!

I love REI!  REI isn't always the best price, but the 20% coupon, (plus 5% off for REI card) makes a big discount.  And easy returns if it doesn't work!

BTW - I used the "SEARCH" function...  I'll dig deeper next time!

Thanks again!

funny thing is how relatively few people use the wheeleez carts outside of our northern california community...in the midwest and the south seems like other carts are more popular, based upon my completely representative sample of facebook user posts.

I just got my first Hobie. I got the Wheelez designed to fit the scuppers for it. There is a neat little catch at the top of one of the posts to keep it from falling out/off of the yak. Makes it easy to use the wheels as a loading and unloading device from a pickup bed as well as a cart.

I've tried that model out before.  You need to tilt your yak sideways to stick it in.  Worst part is it gets stuck when you try to take it out.  If you have a loaded kayak, your going to spill your gear or need somebody to help you pull it out. Like the other guys said go with a Wheeleez beach cart.

I have the Sea to Summit. Not as good as the Wheeleez on beach sand, but I like the solid seating so it doesn't slip off or misalign over bumpy ground. The factory recommends a little silicon or soap to help the sticking problem. I cut holes in both sides of old tennis balls an put them over the posts so they don't set as deeply. Problem solved

+1

Anything will work to pull a light kayak over asphalt, but for a loaded kayak over sand, nothing can compare to  Wheeleez.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

i am curious to see how well the new cart SandTrakZ wheels from C-tug does on sand.  they've been advertising it quite a bit, and it would be nice to get a set of wheels that could fit inside a hatch easily. Think we can get a demo, polepole or bushy?

You can save a few bucks and make your own cart from Shedule 80 PVC, solid aluminum rod (3/4") and any of the Wheeleez balloons ordered directly from Wheeleez.

I have been told many times by naysayers that PVC won't hold up and I would eventually be buying the Hobie/Wheeleez cart anyways.   Well, here's the deal.  I work with metal regularly and know it is a great material to make carts with.  However, done right the Sched 80 PVC is more than strong enough for the application.  It does not rust, it is less likely to mess up the scupper holes, and can be put together by anyone with some basic fabrication skills.  No welding required.

Proof in point.  This cart pictured was built in 2010, the picture itself was taken in 2011 and I still use this same cart for my Revo 13 fully loaded over rocks and rough ground.  This summer I used it to haul my 2013 AI fully rigged to and from the water many times. Never broke a single part yet.

A couple of upsides to this design is that I can change out the length of axle rod to accommodate the bigger 11" Wheeleez that I use in really really soft sand.  In addition, it breaks down into 3 PVC pieces, 1 axle, and the 2 wheels and fits into an old camp chair bag for in hull storage (wheels are just tossed in the hull).

Note:
The "T's" with the locking snap pin mid way up where hogged out so that the verticle tubes can pass right through them.   I used Sched 40 PVC for shims to fit the 3/4" diameter solid aluminum axle.

One thing I have added since these photos is the tennis ball I cut in half, holed and slip down the tub for the Hobie to rest on.
