I have noticed that some people paint their cannon ball weights when using them as downrigger weights.  I was thinking something like Plasti Dip spray would work, but have not tried using this stuff on lead weights before.

What do you guys typically use when doing this?

While I've never done it, I've read about some that have and Plasti Dip sounds about right although I don't know if they used the spray.

I used the spray plasti dip on my dive weights.  It lasted about 6 months, but it had the belt running through it so it wasn't the best application.  It would probably last longer on a cannon ball weight.

I used liquid electric tape but I think Plasti Dip will work a lot better.
I torched the weight so the rubber will stick better.

Could someone explain the reasons for painting the weight? Thanks.

1.  So you don't have to handle exposed lead.
2.  So you're weights don't mark the deck of the boat.
3.  Don't like the color of bare lead.
4.  So you can mark them with you color to prevent theft.
5.  To match your shoes.
6.  Higher resale value.

Yes, that's why it's green!

How bout those powder coat made for jig head? I guess you can heat the Lead with a torch then sprinkle the powder afterwards. You probably have to bake it in the oven to make it more durable. Just be careful not to melt the lead, just heat it enough for the powder paint to melt/stick.
