There is usually a FG officer around there so be sure you know the boundary.

We looked up the boundary and compared the GPS coordinates to the map of the Slough and double checked on Google Earth. We paddled a good way up to look around and then on the way back dropped a line in once we were in the SMCA. I imagine having the fishing gear on board (in the rod pod) is okay in the reserve as long as we don't have any gear in the water. Any thoughts?

You should be fine as long as you Dont have a line in the water in the "no fish" areas.  ES is one of my favorite areas back when you could fish anywhere in it.  I always launched at Kirby & paddle the canals.
