Not wanting to let the weather window close without me getting my fill . .I hit it up at Spanish Bay again with glass like conditions - although a little windier than yesterday.

Did the usual fishing in the kelp in about 40 FOW.  Lots of big kelp rockfish (big compared to the ones I get off Coral St Beach), just a few blues, a really BIG rock greenling and 2 more lings (both undersize but 1 was close).

This is a really ling-y spot (have always heard that and can now verify with 7 in 2 days), especially more towards Cyprus Point but I was not going to paddle far today so I just staid close.  I also spent a couple of hours trolling the kelpless areas with frozen chovies on a halibut rig.  Not 1 nibble doing that, unfortunately.  For the kelp I used 5 inch FT swimbaits in 2 exciting new colors (chartruese with orange tail and Green Flash) both worked very well.  The 2 lings were caught on Green Flash on back to back drops.

Still no halibut but a super time on the kayak for sure.  Hopefully they are making this area an MPA to preserve it's pristine nature.  All the fish I have caught here are not only bigger but look more healthy, too (fatter, better colors).  Hopefully it will not be used later as an example of an MPA 'fixing' a place because there are just tons and tons of big healthy RCG fish here.

Make sure and fish here before it's closed!

Fishing is cool

You have identified one of the often voiced complaints that no surveys will be done before changing the status of an area.

Sounds like you had the perfect end of summer fishing.  It'll be at least two weeks before we might be able to try it.....but I'll keep it in mind.
