Thanks for posting the video, still my last choice, too many videos watching what happens when hypothermia sets in and teaching classes to people who are not in the best shape to right a liferaft and climb in.

The real point is we should all know out limits, error on the side of caution.

Well I never believed the suggestions that waders would pull you under. Waders full of water might prevent you from self rescuing. The video does a good job showing that wearing waders on a kayak is safe to do.

100% agree, couldn't agree more. I know if I go in the drink its only going to be for a brief moment, and I've practiced that moment lots of times. Know your limits and don't push it. I you think your wet suit might not be enough then it probably isn't. Practice in a controlled environment and find out what works for you.
With my dry suit I've been too hot a few times but its easy to cool down, drop a leg over or stick your hands in the water for a few minuets. It's surprising how fast that water sucks heat from you. I've been out on days when it's gone from raining and cold to 75*+ and sunny, never once did I ever think about second guessing my dry suit choice.

When I grew up all waders were rubber, not the neoprene that is common (and buoyant) of today. I think most of the rumors of waders pulling you under were based on decades and decades of canvas and rubber waders, that didn't float, that would waterlog and make you heavier instead of lighter and warmer like neoprene does. I agree, the best bet is a drysuit, I just haven't been able to scrape up the $800 for one my size...
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

I am installing a relief zipper in my wetsuit. What do you do with wadders? A zipper would let water in. It doesn't look like you could easily use a pee bottle without a zipper either.

There are waders with a relief zipper.
Yesterday at Fort Ross, 50 degrees with 15kt winds and spray everywhere, i was so comfy in my drysuit  :)
But gortex waders and a good spray jacket works about 80% as good.   I'm to fat to be comfortable in a wetsuit.
Beg, borrow, steal.... A drysuit is worth its weight in gold.  In my opinion

Sounds like alot of people using wet suits for lake fishing?  I have only been going to Folsom and Negro bar this winter since i am still so green with this whole thing, plus its so close to my house...

I have yet to fall in with my new SOT, but now im getting a little paranoid haha.  I usually just go in some light 511 pants that i have gotten wet and arent too heavy when wet.  Usually just roll em up with my vibrams on when getting in, deal with some cold feet for a while but its nothing crazy.  And a nice warm jacket that also shouldnt be too heavy when wet.  Guess its a bad comparison for much colder water and worse weather conditions though.

Regardless with the limited gear i have im already expecting my day to be cut short if i fall in.  I guess i just need to take a dive and put what i have to the test close to shore lol.

I do plan on buying my friends wetsuit next month.  But i have always wondered how warm it keeps you IN and OUT of the water...Ive never worn a wetsuit before.

I have always been skeptical about wearing waders due to them filling with water if i fall in..i could see that being kind of a nice thing to have up until that happens.  I really need to take the next self rescue class that pops up, better safe than sorry!
