I tried the south side of Mendocino headlands yesterday, accessed through Big River.  i've been paddling through the tons of caves out there before, but never fished it.  The bottom line is if you get up this way, this spot is definitely worthy.  There's a launch ramp in the river mouth.  The tricky part is getting out through the surf, but if you can handle that, the fishing's worthy.

Report: 4 lings, farmed 2, 2 to the boat, 1 in the boat.  All 25 - 28".  As many various rock cod as I needed.  You could catch a boatload of big blues here. The dang things won't let any rig to the bottom.

Also caught 1 harbor seal.  I was trying the old re-sink the blue trick for a ling when I caught what I thought was the biggest fish of my life, before I realized it was a seal.  Gave me a great tow around for a while.  Sorry no pics, but that's probably the best thing about this spot.....its really beatiful.

I catch a seal and I'll spend a lot less money on lantern fuel. Good blubber too.

Thanks for the tip on Big River, I have driven past there many times and wondered how the area might be.  But then every place in that Mendocino area I have ever tried has had some good stuff to find.  See you out there.....
