Can anyone direct me to resources on kayak fishing from San Felipe to Gonzaga coastline and beyond? I have some cash in a bank and am going to get it with a kayak buddy. We are taking our yaks and tackle and want to spend a few weeks bumming the coastline and spend the cash. It has been hard to find fishing resources for this area. BTW anyone wish to join us?
Thanks in advance for any guidance

Talk to Spike he might be able to help you or point you in the right direction.

Good luck, have fun and be safe in BCN

hey raynman, i have a house in san felipe and have been going there and all of baja my whole life, grew up in socal. as for fishing inshore along that section of coast it is not the greatest, the area from north of san felipe to north of puertecitos is relatively just sand flats with huge tidal shifts, depending on the moon phase it can get up to a 18-20 foot tide which means the tide can go out over a mile, great for exploring and finding sand dollars and other shells, but not great for fishing. there are corvina that inhabit this area but few and far between. most of the fishing is out at the islands, miles offshore, and still not the best, no pelagics to speak of, mostly corvina and totwaba(sp), which is illeagal to fish for, even though the locals due fish for and sell at markets as bass. once you get down the coast to gonzaga you start getting more rocky stucture and less tidal influence and start to get into more fish species(parrots, trigger etc) but to get down the coast can be an adventure, they have put in a road to puertecitos and are in the process of getting it to gonzaga, so be prepared with gas and extra tires. i remember years ago when there were no roads south of san felipe it woould take two days to get to gonzaga and you better have a major 4wd.  are you taking SOT or SIK, as much fun as a SOT would be i would much rather be in a touring kayak, less profile for the major winds that come up along this section of the sea of cortez. what time of year are you thinking of going, this can also determine which way the winds come from, from the south for months in summer then one day it just switches and comes from the north for months and they are strong winds. also not a whole lot of support south of puertecitos, so if you need to bail there is nothing but desert for miles and no fresh water. i do believe that when the Erik went down that was one of the obstacles for rescue, survivors got to shore but they couldnt get to them from land. sounds like a great adventure, hope you guys have a fun and safe trip, well hope this helps, cameron

I camp and fish this area each year around Oct/Nov. Have been going down since 2000. It is great for catching large numbers of fish, though the great fishing is long gone. It use to be an adventure getting to this area due to lack of good roads, but the highway is now paved to just before Gonzaga Bay. If you have never been I would say go to Gonzaga Bay and fish that area. Good camping can be found at Rancho Grande or Campo Beluga. The only hotel is Alfonsina's. All these are at Gonzaga Bay. Anything north of this area is quite remote for places to stay and water access is not too good. There are plenty of areas to explore for fishing around Gonzaga Bay, and would probably take a week to fish it. Best book to read up on for fishing south of the border is Baja Catch.  I believe it is out of print so may be hard to find, plus it is 15 years old, so the information is getting out of date. Awesome book if you can find. A good website for current travel in the area s BajaNomad.com. Check the forum area for current road updates. Just remember that in winter the wind blows a lot, summer is brutally hot, and spring/fall months are best. If you hit Gonzaga Bay between October to March there is a good chance you will see whale sharks in the bay. We have had them swim right under our boats, and my wife and brother have actually snorkeled with them in this area.Truly a must visit location. Get there soon, the newly paved road will take away the remoteness of the location.
