Hello all. Just picked up my first kayak. In the process of rigging and collecting gear. Looking at picking up a drysuit off the bat. I've found all sorts of info on Kokatat and their great customer service. I'm interested in info on the Stohlquist "shift" suit. Anyone out there have one or any opinions? Looking to get more info to help make the decision. Thanks.

Bumping this thread. My chubby self no longer fit any of my wetsuits and am debating on a drysuit vs getting another wetsuit while I shed the pounds.

This is a new drysuit so I don't know if there is much info out there. I was looking at this one too, but it looks like it is more geared towards sea kayaks. I have a stohlquist drysuit and it has been great.  If somebody gets one I would like to hear about it. I will see if I can get more info.

The Latex neck gasket is going to be uncomfortable.  Kayak fishing is staying out of the water and trying not to get wet.  You should check out the Kokatat Angler Hydrus drysuit.  I own one and really like it.
The leg area has cordura which stops hooks and spines from creating holes.  The neoprene neck gasket keeps me comfortable all day.  Its widely worn by ncka members.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Hey VWool! Thanks to Dan and your YouTube videos, I went and got a caribbean 14. I would loved to have got it from Headwaters but with my work schedule and the distance, it would be months before I could get one. I've been dealing with Outback in Larkspur. Cool guys and they are still NCKA friendly. Jay has been great but you guys seem to be the authority on caribbeans. Jay is looking into ordering the suit so I can try it on for fit. I will be giving the neoprene neck a second thought though. If I end up getting one I'll post some feedback.

Dang, $950 price tag, I'd feel guilty getting fish slim to that suit.

Lol. Yeah, it is steep. $850 after NCKA discount. So I guess I'm basically looking at paying $300 more on a wetsuit so that I don't look like a treky. I dunno. It's on order and should be in the shop by next week for me to try on. If it fits and feels good,I'll probably pick it up and give it a shot. I've put the firearm collection on hold for a while so there is new room in the budget.

The paddle jackets are aimed at people touring and going long distances and needing to stay dry and warm or for white water and surf kayak use. I want a jacked to minimize wind chill when it is windy and to block the UV out on the water. I want an open neck to let my body heat out. Even in 48 degree water a farmer john and a windbreaker with sealed cuffs is all I need or want. Now if I was fishing in the northeast during the winter that would be very different and a drysuit setup would be important.

Going down a step from the farmer john wetsuit there are neoprene pants that I have found to work well. Add a neoprene vest and I would be OK in a cold water immersion long enough to get back on the kayak and out of the water.

A drysuit is only good out in the ocean if you have a lot of insulation underneath and that amount of bulk makes them a lot warmer than a 3mm farmer john - great for diving but not something I would find comfortable winter or summer out on California waters fishing.
