First time out to HMB, plan on launching from old pier.
Want to make it a productive day, with rock fish or crab.
Does anyone advise? Bait, location, anything will help
Thank you.

Tomorrow might not be the best day for your first time out at HMB. I would wait for smaller swells.

Wednesday: Variable winds 5 kt or less. Mostly sunny. Mixed swell...W 6 ft at 13 seconds and SW 1 ft at 14 seconds. Wind waves around 1 ft.

That sized swell is normal. HMB is home to Mavericks, and the swells can get much bigger. You can get marine forecasts here:

If it's your first suggest you go with someone familiar with area. Check out hook up section. Be safe and have fun! :smt006

The swell size isn't too bad.  But the period is long and if you plan on fishing the reefs and don't know them well, this sort of swell can catch you off guard and break on you.

If you just plan on crabbing and are going to stay to the inside (beachside of the jaws), it isn't too bad.  Go at least 1/4 mile from the jetty and crab anywhere in say, 30-40 feet of water.  That should put you on some crab.

Thank you everyone for the input. It was a fun and productive day. Me and my friend each end up with 4 dungeness crabs and 5 rock crabs. Didn't hit the limit but that's more than we can eat.

Only stayed at the mouth and did met some nice guys on the water.
Sorry didn't realize that I didn't take any picture until they are in my belly :smt003

Will do it again  :smt001
