I went to Linda Mar on Monday (yes, on my inflatable   :smt001 ).   The sea was great.   3 ft every 15 or 17 seconds as predicated.   Mike was going out for a dive (and later on his yak) when I went out (about 11:00).   I head toward the middle of cove trolling an RSK w/anchovie.  Nothing bit.  There was lots of pelican and other birds in the water around 40 feet.  Metered hay stacks of bait but they moved out of the cove after a couple drifts for bait.  The bird disappeared very suddenly also.

I proceeded to the reefs.  Lots of middle level fish were metered.  Dropped my baits down and I hooked up one black cod after another.  I could have had multiple hookups, but I used only 1 hook.  I hooked onto a black one time, and as I was reeling it, the black stopped fighting and I felt something much heavier on the line.  I continued reeling without much of a fight.  Emerging from the deep, I saw a large ling was holding my black. Definitely a keeper.  I tried to pull the ling close to my boat to gaff it a few times, but I wasn't able to get it close enough.  (Had to be extra carefully getting the sharp objects close to my inflatable if you know what I mean).  Mr Ling finally let go of the fish and drifted back into the deep.    I immediately dropped the black down, but Mr Ling didn't see it.

I continue fishing and caught my limit  of rockfish which included good size blacks and blues,  a good size brown and a few quality rockcods that looked like gophers but not sure.  There were occasional schools of bait that swim by the reef when I was fishing.  I caught a lively sardine once.  Hooked it in the nose and sent it straight down.   A ling hit it right after it got to the bottom.  Got it up and boy is it a nice size ling.  27 inches, 7 lbs or so.   I continued to fish and release untill I got a really bad sunburn.   4 or 5 other kaykers were also out in the afternoon, and I can hear them swearing over lost fish every so often.   This is the time to go !!!

No kidding huh. I'm a long time surfer and know Linda Mar pretty well. Have had some hair raising days on my surfboard, couldn't imagine a kayak.

I am thinking of hitting it int he afternoon thusday if possible.  I think LM picks up late.  Last year the fishing really improved toward the end of August.  WIth regards to the Sardine I did that once too.  I was trying to fish right next to the rocks for some hali and dropped down my only Sardine, BAM before I felt the wait hit the bottom fish on.  Problem was it wasn't Rockfish season yet. :smt012
