Thinking of having a reel powder coated for GF in her favorite color for Christmas.  Anyone ever had a reel done before, if so who did it, what did it run?

I have had Motorcycle parts done, and there some good coaters out there and some not so good ones.  Some shops just plain suck at wrapping or taking care of the threads, and reels parts seem to be very small.  I have tried to contact the guy listed on Penn Parts/Scott's bait and Tackle, but he hasn't returned any of my calls, so I am wondering if he is still in business.

Anodizing would be less hassle with parts going back together. The powder coat builds thickness in areas that will be hard to mask or machine off/out.

One thing you have to watch out for with powder coating is tolerance stack-up caused by the coating.  Isn't much of an issue in areas where fitment isn't as critical.  Consider haveing it anodized in her fav. color or having the side plates laser marked with an image/saying, etc...

Not to mention that powdercoating chips, and if moisture gets underneath it will cause all sorts of corrosion issues.  Might be easier just to buy a new reel in her favorite color.

Check out what colors Avet makes, I know they have quite a few different colors.

Anodizing an Old Penn is not an option.  Reel is made from Steel and not Aluminum.

Yeah, I was gonna ask which reel it was.  The tolerances on old penns would probably allow for powdercoating but they gotta heat the parts to bake on the powder, it'd probably warp the plastics side plates and you'd wind up spending more  than the reel is worth.

For what you'd wind up spending customizing one you can just buy a new (or used) avet in the color that she likes.  They have custom anno but they're usually limited release and pricey.
