Help needed in Excel. I have a nutrient management plan I am working on. I have 90% of it done. I figured out how to use data validation to create drop down boxes with a crop name, now I need to add a numerical value associated with each crop name, populate that in a cell and add it to others of the same kind at the bottom of the sheet. Any help is appreciated. I have you tubed it but I am still lost. There is only one numerical value for each crop.

And just for your information,  the data entered by growers during this self check up will aid in ground and surface water quality in the Salinas basin.  Here is the link for the document in my public drop box.  Can't upload Excel files.

Cappy-

Have you tried Filemaker Pro?  I've found it ultra useful for relational type databases with ability to script/program field relationships......"if-then" stuff.  Also lends itself to web publishing, with a front end that can graphically look like a survey.

And, I'm pretty much a kook with higher level computer stuff, that's why I use FMP.

Bushy,  thanks dude.  I figured one of our more "techie" types might have jumped in an done it for me already LOL.

I will investigate the FMP for sure.   I use a database at work and have only ever used excel for making lists and adding things up.

Have fun tomorrow!

I did it.  I plea on FB resulted in the advice to try the lookup function.  I googled that and figured it out!

to associate a numerical value to a crop, use the name function. insert -> name -> define. type in the name, and the numerical value it refers to.

Thanks Tim.  I got it with the lookup deal but I think your idea may have another fit.  Thanks all!

I didn't know that there were excel wizards here (though I am not surprised). I was having some trouble with nested if functions last year and went to an excel forum, when I should have gone to NCKA!

I know! NCKA is loaded with computer whizz types.  I aways come here first for everything.  The guys working on the environmental management side might even be interested in this table as it is a nitrogen loading worksheet.
