Although the fishing is non-kayak I wanted to share the experience of my sons first individual fish catching experience.  I can't remember when I caught my first fish but seeing him catch his first was a terrific experience.  Blue Gill can be a great fight and when you are three it is like fighting a Salmon!  My son and his trusty Spiderman rod and reel entered Lake Tulloch ready to go.  After his first Tubing experience in which he had a great time and later almost drown, :smt011 ( fell head first into the hole of the tube and thankfully I was watching from a couple of feet away.  3-5 of my scariest seconds, we headed off to catch some blue gill.

He wanted no help and after ten minutes of casting and retrieving his nightcrawler he caught his first blue.  Reeled it all the way in and as the pictures show handled the fish nicely before releasing.  As it turned out it was a slow day and he only caught two.  Sorry for the long post about a blue gill, just a proud father.

Another plus was getting my wife out on her first kayaking experience, hopefully I will make this a family sport some day.

jason, well done, especially the saving the kid part, but good on you for the fish and photos part too.  I have 2 boys and have saved each a couple of times, I guess it comes with the job description. those big heads do
not stay above the water well, I'm glad they are old enough to swim pretty well these days.

Nice work Papa. It just gets better. My older daughter (9) has 16 trout to her name now, the last a 16-incher from theTuolumne Middle Fork last year--I will never forget her first trout nor that one. Nor her first BG at Loch Lomond a couple of years ago. The looks on her face will stay with me always. My younger one (7) caught her first BGs at Loch Mond last weekend with Red Worms and a cane pole--again I think I enjoyed it more than she did if that's possible  :smt001. Family. Fishing. Kayaking. Good stuff all of it. Congrats.

It truly was great experience. Now I have to get him something a little bigger.
A 16" Rainbow up there is a great fish.  Bigger than any I caught up there.
Hopefully mom won't keep him out of a kayak till he is 18 like she vows.

That rainbow was bigger than any I caught as well that day (mine were 11-12 inches) on my 3-wt fly rod. We were fishing the same pool--me at the head with a Parachute Adams and her in the middle with Power Bait.

My dad passed away just this last May. Most of my fondest memories date back to fishing excursions he and I took, most of which were before the age of 10. I'm sure that your son look back on this bluegill fondly too.

Keep up the good work,
Scott

Scott sorry to hear about your father. I too have fond memories of fishing with my father, as a matter of fact I don't know what memories I would have without it.  I am still lucky to be able to make more memories with him.
