so was it the pulp of the plant that burnt you?  or was the pulp heated by the chain then burned you?
I though these this were medicinal?

Just pulp. Crazy effects for just pulp too. quite painful.

Yup, century plant. I love them!  Some people don't react to them the way you did. If it bloomed, it will die , and the suckers are new plants that will begin the cycle anew. Sort of like salmon in that respect.

Sentry or Century? I planted one a few years ago because I thought it would last a century, But if that sucker is just gonna stand there and attack me when I ain't looking, then I'm gonna dig it up. I don't need that.

It is a Century Plant. Its a type of agave, akin to the agave from which they produce tequila.

The cactus is cool to look at, but don't get too close. They have brutal spines at the end of every blade and hard teeth running the entire length on both sides of every blade. For some reason, rattlesnakes love then too. We have killed 3 over the years that have made their home in amongst the plant and its suckers. Wondering how many made a short stay there and moved on. And then the pulp thing that I just found out about the hard way.

The way I see it is, if you really like them, enjoy from a distance. heck, you don't even have to water these things. But they can really hurt you. And given time, they will take over. I talked to a couple friends and neighbors about it and two of then had to remove the plant via dozer!
