I have my two 2 week Annual Training coming up 10-25 Aug. So I am off to HMB to go after an elusive Ling and some Rock Cod.  I know a lot of folks are chasing salmon or WSB, but I am happy putting some fish in the freezer.  I may rig a rod and practice trolling as I have never tried that before.  I picked up deep six and want to see how to handle it.  Plan on parking down by the old peir at 7ish, swell report looks good 3-4 feet, weather shows high of 58 with winds up to 11 mph, with Fog in the AM

Feel like a bit of a paddle/pedal? Won's report sounds like WSB to me. I had much the same experience a couple years ago in about the same spot when I had given up on surface drifting for WSB and was pulling up rockfish from the reef there.

Hi Kevin, I'm planning the same thing. Hope to see you at the launch or on the water. I have a red Hobie Quest & fish with a fly rod.

So I went out with Kevin this morning and had an amazing time. Bagged two rock cod that have been devoured. And learned a ton. Kevin graciously provided me with gear, bait, AND put me on some fish . I just arrived with a rod and a kayak nothing more and he provided all the rest... along with a considerable amount of humor. He was extremely patient and helpful, very structured and an excellent guy to fish with and observe. He is a military man so everything is in its place, sorted, and organized so I got a lot of good ideas about rigging etc. Top bloke. Couldn't ask for a better first time example. Good luck with your deployment Kevin!! Pls ping me when you get back. Sooo grateful. Thank you.

Also met Bill, Crusty, and John. Hope to see all of you again soon.

Learned a ton of stuff but most of the lessons are about getting down the basics:

1. If it doesn't float or isn't tied down. It will soon be gone.

2. You need to have your boat and fishing gear totally prepared before you get on the water so while you are out there you are just changing lures through snap clips etc trying to fiddle with stuff in the middle of the ocean is not a good idea.

3. Everything needs to be within reach because standing up or moving around is not an option (or at least it wasn't for me).

To give you some idea of how ill prepared I was I had none of this stuff this morning but will soon get it. At the very least, to round out my gear I need:

Pool noodles on rods so that they float.
Plastic pliers that float.
A fish stringer with lanyard.
A net or gaff. (that floats)
Hooks tackle etc. I am planning on rigging everything on shore so that I can just switch out using snap clips.
A measuring device to see if the fish is legal or not.
A knife for cutting bait.
A Marine radio (that floats).
A dry bag for cell phone wallet keys and license etc. (don't put keys in Kayak they might be hard to get out at end of day)
Those wheelie things so that you don't have to carry your kayak on your shoulder (this should at the top of the list actually).
Rod Holders (already ordered)
Bait.
A container to keep battery dry and secure so that its not banging around in hull.
A filet knife.
Plastic zip lock bags for Filets.
Water.
Sunscreen.
Hat & Shades.
An improved, handle on this message board ... henceforth I will go by ZAMBEZI!!

Thanks for the hookup Squidder. Nice to meet you Zambezi.

I ended up landing 4 lings to 26". No rockies, which surprised me. They like those pink flies!

Zambezi, I like it!  Glad you had good time man, you had one hell of shit eat eating grin out there!  I was happier seeing you land a couple than I was landing my own.  Glad you had a good time, I am hoping those made good a good anniversary dinner for the Zambezi Clan!
