Hey guys :smt006
So I have snorkeled for many years. I started out at about 4-5 years old, digging lampreys and catching crawdads out of the kings river using my brother's old oval black silicone/ glass masks (boy does the smell of that old dive gear bring back memories).

I eventually started getting my own gear and of course, acquired some low end masks of various design. I have had the single plate, twin plate butterfly masks and even the masks that have the peripheral view. I tend to really like the single plate masks. A few years back I purchased a scuba pro, single plate glass mask from my local dive shop and really enjoyed it. Last winter some dirt-bag sniped my mask and snorkel ( about $300 ) out of my truck. So, I would love any feedback/ pros/ cons towards a new purchase.

One thing I noticed is that a lot of spearos are using the butterfly mask design. Why?

I will be primarily using the mask for gold sniping, crawfish diving and snorkeling in lakes, a bit of ab diving and fish spearing in the salt.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys
Jesse

Get what fits your face best and whet works for you.
I had a Cressi Big Eyes and loved it for the extra visibility.
After a few years I noticed it started hurting the bridge of my nose.
Breakdown on the materials??? IDK.
Purchased a similar design. The 'eyes' are not quite as big, but still better viz than most masks and it is low volume.
IMO this should be the criteria in order:
Fit
Viz
Volume
Price

dolphinscuba and leisurepro always have really great sales.any one of the popular brands would be a good purchase.i don't know what a butterfly type mask is but I use a cressi low air volume single mask I got it for about 25$ on sale.
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I suggest going to a local dive shop and that has good return and exchange policy (keep the receipt). Try the mask and make sure it fits your face properly and does not leak (dip your head in the bathtub). This will be the only way to ensure that mask works out.

* I used to work for a dive shop and I always advised my customers to demo it first. Some don't listen, go to Hawaii and end up spending extra money on the rental masks because the mask that they purchased leaked  :smt011

Thanks for all the input bros. Volume is something that I had never really considered. I am assuming that's air volume in the mask that will translate to pressure at depth right? Gonna have to go find another mask that fits my fat noggin. how about the frameless masks? Also found out through Amazon.com that I paid quite a bit too much at my local dive shop.

Thanks again guys :smt006
