I am new to kayaking and don't know how to anchor. On my first try I failed miserably.  So bad that I flipped my kayak twice and lost a pole in the process while trying to fish the outgoing high tide. Upon trying to retrieve my anchor, I felt that the yak wanted to tip and didn't want to risk flipping over a third time so I unclipped it and paddled away.

1. What type of anchoring system do you use?
2. If using a grapple style anchor do you tie the rope through the eyelet on the bottom or at the top of the anchor?

Any help would be appreciated.
Catch you on the flip side!

Sincerely,
Jim

Using the link above as a guide, I have installed this system on three of my kayaks, it is easy to install and utterly easy to use!
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

Thank you Jim for the link to the article and thank you Tote for the ideas. Today I went out and was able to set my anchor and cast out a few times. I went to the same place and the tide was just as fierce as it was when I first went out. I'm only doing it at black point and the tide there really gets moving. The swells in the Petaluma river today was like the swells you expect to see in the bay. When I saw it starting to turn scary for me I came in.

I thought motorcycle riding was a crazy sport but man, yak fishing is insane! If anyone is getting into this thinking its easy they are in for a big surprise! I can't imagine what the sensation of being out in the ocean would be like and excited to see the day of being out there and doing it safely.

If you are a cheap bastard like me, here is a cool video I found on youtube while doing research on how to retrieve an anchor if it gets stuck.
