I'm planning on starting around 6:30 tomorrow. In Capitola I usually work the kelp beds. I never really fished SC area. I see people getting Salmon in the area, so any tip would be appreciated.
Please PM if you'd like to join.

Use a sinker release and bring two 1 pound balls and two 2 pound balls. Bring some type of bait rotator and 4-6 pieces of bait. Troll from 50' down all the way to the bottom. Troll in water 80-120 deep.

Launch at the harbor and paddle towards the mile buoy. You will see a zillion PB's. Head out that way, it's about 3-4 miles and troll for salmon. Fish the mile buoy on the way in for rockies. Then, if you have the energy, drag for halibut all the way back to the harbor. If you get the trfecta (salmon, ling, hali), be sure to post it up cuz there ain't no fish in Santa Cruz.  :smt005

Personally I prefer SC over Capitola for many reasons.

Thank you for the tips!
Which Downrigger would you recommend? I have a Hobie adventure.
Cheers,

To keep it simple, I would use a sinker release and not a downrigger. You could use a diving plane but it is easier to drag the bottom with a 2  pound ball. If you wanted to use a downrigger, most use the Scotty Laketroller and replace the wire with spectra.

One last tip is to check your bait frequently because there is a bit of kelp and jellies.

Not to threadjack but when you can afford it, convert your A to an AI. I have the saw and can help you. For rockfising, the AI has no benefits but for all big game and just having fun, the AI is No Ka Oi.

Trolling 2-2.8MPH for salmon works for me.  AND don't forget to post a report...we love pictures.

Also, have halibut as your Plan B.  Use barbless hooks JUST IN CASE

We were 2 for 2 on Sunday (PB) and I didn't get a hit today around natural bridges. You might want to consider mooching since jellies+grass were a problem. A buddy of mine landed one on a wma near the bottom in the morning and there was a short flurry in the same area. But, it was slow for most.
