Hello all,

My name is David and live in the south bay area.  I have been working on my Ocean Kayak Zest that I bought last winter and hope to do some real fishing this summer.  Not new to Kayak fishing but first time owning a tandem.  So far the reception from my family has been lukewarm.  Hopefully that will change soon.
I took the tandem out to Elkhorn Slough for a test paddle on Monday and had a real tough time paddling back to the dock against the incoming tide.  I kept telling my 9 year daughter not to stop paddling.  Talking about being desperate.  LOL.
Hope to see everyone on the water soon.

David

Welcome David.

Interesting story. I could imagine a "We could end up in Reno if you stop paddling" comment   :smt044

Glad you made it back.

Welcome David,

Super low tide on Monday morning makes the slough a river as the tide rushes in.  Next time paddle up the slough a little before high tide and let the receding tide pull you back out.

See you around,
Josh

Welcome David. As Josh said, time your trips to the slough based on the tides. It's a workout paddling against the current even with a hobie. I have a Malibu 2XL which I cant seem to get rid of even though I don't use it much anymore. A lot of people don't like tandems but they are great for families, dogs and guide fishing. The zest is a great 2 person + kids yak. It's not a great solo paddle yak so if you your are ocean fishing, you are going to want to have a buddy.

Welcome to the madness David.

Don't worry, your family will come around to it once they attend a few NCKA events.  :smt003

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and also for the great tips on paddling on the slough.  Next time I will definitely be looking at the tide table to find a sweet spot before heading out to the slough again.

Great Bass, I had been debating between the Malibu 2XL and the Zest for some time before deciding to go with the Zest.  When I picked up the Zest at a local shop, it looked much longer and narrower than I previously thought.  Also, it was somewhat difficult to load on top of my car and carry around on a cart due its shape and size, but I guess that's what comes with getting a tandem.  Besides some minor inconveniences the tandem seems pretty fast and stable, and I can't wait to take it out again, this time for some fishing!

Oh, my daughter tells me she's 8, not 9.  Doh!
