Hi All,

I'm ready to buy my first fish finder and was thinking about getting a new/used Lowrance Elite 4X. My novice question is whether I can mount the transom transducer inside my kayak like a thru hull transducer?

Am I giving anything up mounting it that way?

Thanks.

The 4x is perfectly suited to mount in-hull.  Search "duct seal" on the forum.  You will find MANY topics covering this very question.  If don't correctly, you will not be sacrificing the signal.

That's how I mounted mine.  Works perfectly, just takes awhile for the temp to acclimate.

If you feel you need the GPS option it's a good unit. However for a first FF try the Humminbird 500 series without GPS and save $100 or more. I have both. The Elite's display is pretty small and difficult to read under certain circumstances

The Elite 4x is w/o GPS (fishfinder only).  If you need GPS then it would be the Elite 4 (Gold).

If you fish the salt at all I HIGHLY recommend a unit with a GPS. Here is a link to a Lowrance Mark4 (83/200 trans with GPS charts) for $189.00 shipped.

Also attached is a pdf for $30 rebate from Lowrance. So that gets you down to $159 clams, good deal. Mike
