At t he last HOW event, my up rudder cord snapped on my AI.  I took it in to CCK and to my surprise they said Hobie had recalled them and that they would replace the rudder and cords for free.  I just had to pay for the labor.  So, I got an upgrade for 85.00.  MY AI is a 2011.

You're 2011 did't have the new "shark fin" rudder already?  Pic's of your new rudder?  I have a 2011 as well & there was some confusion when I bought it as to what the "correct" rudder IS for that model/hull.

I have a end of the year 2011 but converted to AI as a kit. I thought the shark fin rudder came out in 2012 and the Aka V2 came out in 2011. Anyway, my 2011 Adventure port steering cable broke and they replaced the cable for free but did not offer me an upgrade.

I have a large, "shark fin" rudder on my 2011.  It pivots up at a 180 deg angle (not a stow-n-go).  Guessing this is the new 2012 rudder on my 2011?

sounds like it.  they are nice rudders but can be a bit of a PITA to work around.

When I bought my AI last year at CCK around August 2012 I had a choice.  For less money there was a 2011 AI model with upgraded shark rudder fin.  Upon closer inspection I opened the rear hatch and noticed the lines were like spider wire and not inserted inside plastic sleeves.  The rudder lines Cris-crossed  the rear hatch area and you can't use the gear bucket.

My biggest concern was the original rudder cables were of thinner diameter w/c were connected to a thicker cable that connected to the rudder fin.
I've had rudder problems on my Revo before and I was 1 mile offshore in Monterey.  It was no fun getting back.

I opted to buy (more money) a 2012 with a factory installed shark fin rudder.

Mine cris-cross @ the rear hatch.  There is just anough to allow the gear bucket to fit in w/o touching the lines.  They are larger lines that tie into a "spider wire".  Seems overly complicated.
