Buying grass fed cow from ranch

Thanks for schooling me on this subject, lots of great info. Thanks for the offer Rich, but I think I'm gonna look into it some more and research . I might DVDs check out a fair just need to know which one sell cattle. Thanks again for the advice.

Ditto on the auction meat.  Hojo hooks me up with some of his cow = great stuff.

Maybe a group buy? Means less storage time in the freezer and we can buy more often.

I always thought that wouldn't a person rather spend a $1000 on the cuts of beef they want rather than on the whole or half cow? a $1000 worth of New Yorks. Rib-eyes, etc sound better than a little bit of everything..    just a thought.

For a couple of years we raised grass-fed beef for Panorama grass fed.  Their website at one time linked to other grass fed ranches throughout CA.

I also picked a hiefer for myself, often they finish out faster, some were ready for slaughter in as little as 18 months.

We also had to finish the animals for 45 days on a mixture of alfalfa, rice bran, and almond hulls.  It gave the animal a good flavor.

Grass-fed cooks much different than grain finished.  I found searing the meat did not work.  I cook it at lower temps and not more than medium rare.

Humboldt county has some good grass-fed ranches.  When there cattle came off the truck they were always the fattest grass-fed on the truck.

If you are on record as a buyer at an auction, you can write off most of the purchase price on your taxes.
