Avoid the temptation of spooling up too much line.  Less line helps keep it from getting caught in the side plates.  IMO you don't really need a lot of line for rockfishing/halibut off a kayak.

You can add nail polish to the edges of the spool where it rubs let it dry and it will even sand down all by itself to a tight tolerance so it won't eat even 12 lb.

Took the reels in for line and discovered  the 9 level wind has some issues
So decided to buy a set up. looked at some affordable reels , under 100
Wondering if anyone has a suggestions or used rigg for sale . I am hoping to spend under 200 or less
Halibit and rock fish is what I will be fishing for

Thanks robert

They are just north of $100 (maybe $120?), but I'd HIGHLY recommend a Shimano Cardiff 400 (or 401 if you fish lefty). I've had several of them for years and really no complaints.

Also, Shimano service is awesome. I recently sent in a Cardiff 301 and two 401's (all fully functional) for their $25 cleaning/service, and they returned 3 brand spankin' new reels. Sweet... I was almost a little sentimental not getting back my well used reels, cause they've caught me so many fish!

Makes me wonder how cheap reels really are when you buy one for 100-150, send it in for $25 repair and they send back a new reel.

I use 30-40 Power Pro. I then tie on a # 54-55 Duo Lock. From there I have Pre tied leaders wrapped on a noodle. Leaders have 100# swivels and another Duo Lock on the end for a swimbait head  I break off and am ready to go again in a minute or less. I usually show with 10-15 prettied extras. I basically refuse to tie knots on the water so there is no chance to get sick.

I do basically the same as Rob but I like a 10-12ft 20-25lb mono top shot for abrasion resistance when fishing for RF in alot of structure. Bimini twist and Yucatan for the braid/mono connection, a little UV knot sense makes it go thru the guides nicer. Saves you from having to cut off braid because it's worn.

I had a #9 I gave to my brother in law, it was an early model that was a knuckle buster, but he wanted somehting for light salt back East.  Hope it worked out for him.

I wonder that, too... I know from my time working at Tackle Warehouse that the markup from wholesale to retail isnt that much, but I bet the markup from production cost to wholesale is pretty steep. But, from their perspective they just look at the bottom line. If it's cheaper to send a new one than pay the labor to clean up an old one....
