Jason

I bought a bunch of butterfly jigs awhile back at Cabelas in Boomtown but haven't tried them yet. They look fantastic. I'm just wondering about the hooking ability.

I don't have a special high-speed jigging spinning rod set-up yet either. I'll try it with conventionals (TLD15/TLD20) first out at the Islands soon. Hope it's hard to keep the big lings/rockfish off of them.

You have a higher hookup rate than with regular iron jigs because when the fish inhales the bait butterfly jigs have free floating hooks so they suck them right in.....you also lose less fish..... as far as retrieve goes. You do not need a high speed reel because since we are fishing for rockfish we don't typically work the lure through the water column. I usually let it fall till I hit bottom a d then give it consistent fixe to six foot quick pulls off the bottom. When I'm fishing suspended fish such as black is and blues I'll fish the jig from right beneath the school and work through them until I'm about 10ft above them then I drop down and repeat....... you are going to really love those jigs ...... good luck.

These are rockfish we're talking about. Drop down an old shoe or maybe a lead weight with an assist hook and you're good to go.

I personally prefer scampi twin tails. End up with lots of cabbies that way.

Yeah, wasn't it Guitarzan who proved that with Barbie lures he made?

I don't really have a favorite. I tried one of these at GS7 with a 6oz lead head. Worked well but I didn't like the action. The lead head wanted to nose dive. Went to outdoor pro and am going to give this a try for the opener on Sat. I'll post my findings.

I used to really like to snap my jig hard and then stop the rod tip immediately so it could free spin to the battom.  Any jig with a diamond pattern will roll when you do this.
Yes sometimes rockfish will eat anything and others they are very picky.
Probably my favorite technique right now is a soft rhythmic bounce.  Not to much action. I've had confidence in this for a while now and it has never let me down.  I learned this on a trip out of Moro bay when six deck hands came along as there weren't to many people. The bite was really tough for every one but the deck hands were catching fish after fish with this method.

My second favorite set up is a tube.  That looks really good. What brand is it?

I had to say it.

I used that color exclusively at GS7 and ultimately landed the largest fish of the tournament although I'll admit, it was completely dumb luck on my part.
