Owing to the fact that I did a network reconfig last Friday and put in a 21 hour day, I took this morning off. Launched at 7:00, made my way to some 35-55 foot water South of Mavericks, and did a little rockfishing. Had a fantastic start - a 5-6 pound Vermillion and a  healthy Black/Blue immediately on my first drop. Spent another two hours with nothing to show for it but some itty bitty ones. Still, I've got a good couple pounds of Rockfish fillets in the fridge. Good to do some saltwater catching, and not just fishing.

The water was kind of lumpy, but there was no breeze at all. Watching the swell  hump up over the Mavericks reef was cool. Watching it actually break on the inner reef was a good reminder to stay the heck away, especially since when I started, the Northwards drift was at about 1.5 mph. On the way back in, I pulled the mobile out of it's waterproof container to check the time. Made a call to my wife too. And during the call, I noticed that that darn current was pulling me close to one of the points on the reef where the waves break. Note to self - saying "I got to go right now hon, it's getting interesting here" is not a good thing to say to a pregnant spouse. Especially when she calls back literally a minute later, and I don't answer, because I'm trying to dig the phone out of the container. I did call her right back though, and once again when I put feet to sand, just to keep her mind at ease.

See you all on Sunday,
Scott

Congratulations on the upcoming baby!  Is this your first?  I spent a lot of last year calming my pregnant spouse about kayak fishing in shark infested waters.  Oddly, she seemed to really calm down once I got myself a nice life insurance policy. Hmmm....

Anyway, enjoy all the fishing (and sleep) you can now.  It's been about 6 months since my son was born and I'm finally getting some fishing in.

Yes, this is our first. I know that come mid-August, I'm not going anywhere, as Maggie is due in Sept. So I've been fishing a lot lately. Fortunately my wife is very cool with it, and loves to fish in her own right. I'm hoping to get maybe a day on the water in the fall, for stripers in the delta, but that's about it.

I also have a $500,000 accidental life insurance policy, as kayaking in GW Shark territory is actually one of many above average risk activities that I participate in. I don't know that it does anything to relieve stress on my wife, but it makes me feel better.
