I clip my radio on the front of my PFD.  It stays out of the way and I can talk/hear without detaching it.

You can see the antennea sticking up right behind the bass' head.

PS if you haven't bought one yet, talk to Mooch about what model he has.  It is amazingly small and he says it works well.  Some sort of Uniden I think.

I have a Standard Horizon HX370S which I like and thought was small untill I saw Mooch's

I got one of those really big Cetacean (?) zingers at a dive shop which I attach to various pad eyes straps and other secure points in my cockpit depending on how I'm fishing. The zinger has a 4 or 5 foot range so it works well.

I do see the advantage of having it on my PFD, but I prefer to have my dive knife in a sheath there, in case I need to cut a line or cut off my PFD.  My dad had a freak accident righting a small sailboat many years ago and got stuck underwater by his PFD.  The only way he lived was to cut his way out of it, fortunately he had his sailing knife on a lanyard.  I also once had to cut an anchorline that got snagged on a prop of a friends boat in a heavy current - we were an instant away ((maybe 1 inch of freeboard) from flipping a large fishing boat just below Bonneville Dam while sturgeon fishing in the Columbia River.

Even with 40 years of bluewater and whitewater experience stuff can sneak up on you without warning. So a knife stays ready whenever I'm on the water.  And there's just not enough room for both on the front of me on a regular basis. Of course if things got woolly I'd grab the radio and clip it on me right away - the big zinger has a snap hook that can be detached in an instant.

BTW I have an older ICOM IC-M1V unit that I love.  It has been through a lot and still works flawlessly.  A quick rinse and a dab of dielectric grease on the charge points every time I use it keeps it going.  Once or twice I have needed to squirt a dab of pot cleaner around the squelch knob and that's it. It was really expensive at West Marine when I bought it but over time has proved to be an excellent value due to it's hardiness.

Chris.
