So I'm a diver mainly and setting up a yak to dive off is pretty easy in that you just need some bungies and clips.  But if I wanted to take my i12s fishing what would I need to do?  I bought my i12s used and apparently the only upgrade was the sailing rudder if that is an important issue.

Thanks!

what type of fishing?  i've used my i9s for fishing a pretty good amount but usually go pretty sparse, milkcrate with a tackle boxes and rod holders zip tied to the crate.  i don't really do much else to it.  I did attach some of the glue on rod holders but i never got around to using them.

I figure rockfish and crab.  I live close to 92 and 280 which means I can hopefully pop over to hmb.  I guess if the salmon ever make it to linda mar I'd give that a whirl too.

Do you have a pic of how to set up a milk crate?

truth is milk crates seem to have gone by the wayside in the past couple of years for people who set up those plano boxes. i still tote mine around though. probably some old forum threads on how to set them up.

for rod holders, i just purchased some 1 1/2" pvc pipe, cut to length, then zip tied them to the milk crate through the holes.  i don't really troll off my i9s so the rod holders are not fishing related, just storage when i get out on the water.  i don't surf launch my i9s (actually its being sold tomorrow), so its up to you to keep your gear safe with bungees or leashes or whatever.

I was hoping to get out this weekend in hmb but the winds look way to scary for a kayak newb.  Maybe another weekend?

well i just sold my i9s today.

my views:

Pros:
Very comfortable.  Since its inflatable, the seat made it the most comfortable of all my kayaks.  i could sit in it all day long and my buttock felt just fine.
Stable - more stable than my revo and my AI without outriggers.  I could stand in it without any concerns.  probably the most stable kayak i've ever sat in except the AI.
Portability - due to short length and foldability, great portability.  could keep it safely inside my car the whole week when i traveled up north to sac town.
It's a frickin' hobie - hobie just makes good boats.

Negs:
Fishability - not that great.  hard to install rod holders so usually had my rods under my legs.  good for casting and retrieving but not so good for trolling/backbouncing.  since i backbounce mostly when i'm in the river, it makes it difficult.
squirrely - the thing was kind of squirrely on anchor.  it had good buoyancy but maybe too much, it would not track very well in the current with anchor down.  made me concerned with the way it would shift around in the current.
anchor - no good place to run a drift anchor. just had to kind of run it off the back of the boat. was hard to pull it up in current because no rear anchor mount/leverage.
paddling - slow boat, but overall pretty responsive
rudder - sailing rudder essentially didn't work with it, when i installed it, the rudder would almost never go down due to the placement of a rear padeye. it would always get stuck and i would have to hit it with my paddle.
set up - setting up and taking down got to be annoying, enough so that i would just leave it inflated in the back of my subaru when i would fish multiple days in Sac town.
weight - surprisingly heavy.

overall, i really liked my i9s even with all the negatives. the negatives were all relatively minor. the only reason i decided to sell it is that i don't travel anymore so i don't need it hiding in the back of the subaru when i go fishing.

i purchased a revo 11 for my river trips and its a better fit for the drift fishing/anchoring that i prefer for the american.  the revo 11 is about the same weight and is super easy to carry/cartop.  also, a lot more customizable for rod holders, etc, faster paddling and peddling and more responsive to rudder control.  overall the 11 is a much better fit for me than the i9s was.
