I am shopping for a back up / loaner radio. Does anybody have first hand experience with this unit?

It's one of those pieces of equipment that better is always  ..... well .... better.  I'd say spend a little extra on the safety gear.

Just my opinion  :smt006

I know Abking uses them, and I recently bought two...for the small amount of times I use mine while diving I think it will work fine.

For a back up unit for you Mel I would think it is a pretty good inexpensive option.

Just my 2 cents.

If your going to trust your life with it, I wouldn't even consider cobra products.  Not even as a backup.  That one is only rated at 1/3 watts.  Most of ours are 5 watt, and sometimes can have a hard time signaling peopple.  Even the Cobras with higher wattage have reviews where they perform nowhere near as good as other radios.  As far as durability goes, they dont look nearly as rugged as practicaly any other manufacturer. Expand the list of reviews, dont just look at the two good ones they are highlighting on Amazon.

"Unit failed the first day I used it"
"Not Waterproof, June 4, 2012"
"Doesn't work reliably"
"Cheap product had to return"

And pretty much every good review is based on its cost compared to other units.

Want a decent, yet inexpensive radio?  Check out this one: http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Horizon-HX150-5Wcompact-Handheldvhf/dp/B00AJVX5L6/ref=sr_1_16?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1367449983&sr=1-16&keywords=standard+horizon+vhf
