That battery holder is a pretty cool idea. But it wouldn't work for me because I kayak saltwater 80% of the time and there's always water inside the hull...I'd have to replace the corroded terminals every 2 months! I do appreciate the versatility of it though.

I have my battery in the rear hatch, i use a carved out gear bucket to store it in.  I'm sure this thing is a response from Hobie because I'm sure most people do the carved out bucket method.  I like the clean factory look.  I hit a rock and jacked up my Mirage Drive the other day and bent the rods, so I'm headed to Sunrise Mtn Sports in Livermore today.  I'll ask them about the new parts.

Hey sin, it works really well in saltwater. The battery is suspended by the hatch so it isn't sitting in the bottom. I've had 3 different kayaks with suspended battery trays of some sort or another, 2 of those kayaks didn't see freshwater while I owned them. With the battery suspended you could have a few gallons in the kayak and still not get the battery wet so long as you don't open the hatch. Dielectric grease, and disconnecting the battery are the two biggest things you can do to prevent corrosion. I'll add the use of quality waterproof connectors is huge too. Like any else, preparation and preventive matanince are key. Taking a blank kayak with no holes or electronics is pretty simple, but as we add hatches, gear, GPS, FF, mirage drives, rudders, ect. The need to keep those systems performing rises.

Since the landlord likes the black fins, I wonder why Hobie hasn't come out with some clear ones?  I do know that there is somewhere clear material that would work.

Jeffo,

could you please share the price?

Thanks,

I hit a submerged log in the Russian river one time and bent the leading mirage drive mast.  You can straighten them out if you have a bench vise and a big pair of channel locks.  If nothing else, you can get them pretty straight and save them for spares.

Really happy to see the larger tires for the Trax 2 cart!  Now, if only I can just buy the tires to replace them on my current cart I would be really happy!  :smt004

I'll tag in on the "hobie parts" topic ... we all know the premise that if something can go wrong, it will go wrong ... generally at the most inopportune time.  Decided to spend a few bucks and order up a "spare parts" kit to carry with the yak.

Here's what I ordered and will carry (applicable to my AI):
Locking Ring(s)  Quan 5  [overkill I know, but they are cheap and can help save someone elses day]
Replacement Drain Plug  Quan 1  [P/N 10092030]
Shear Bolt Quan 2   [P/N8032091]  Two extras came included/installed on the riggers so that gives me 4 extras
Shear Nut  Quan 2   [P/N8052081]
Fitting Tool  Quan 1   [P/N71115101]
Rudder Pin  Quan 1   [P/N88991101]
Total Cost of these spare parts was about $22 ~ value to me while OTW or Vacation; Priceless!

Other item(s) I will consider carrying a spare of in the future would be the Pedal Adjustment Assembly [P/N81236001 $10.99] & maybe one of each [left/right] foot strap, though inconvenient if it broke while on vacation, could still be used w/o it.

Any suggestions of other parts that have been prone to the "unforeseen"?

Thanks!

~Bill
