Maybe this is old news, but I can't seem to find it posted anywhere. So maybe this will be useful to someone...

I stopped by the Santa Cruz harbor yesterday to see if I could get info on launch fees. Specifically, I was interested in the "A" dock (next to Aldo's), since that's the only place I've launched from. There was a lady at the booth near the parking lot and I talked to her. I also went to the main office on the other side of the harbor and asked again. Mostly, I got similar answers, but neither was entirely clear on all of the details. Anyways, some of the following info could be wrong---it's just my interpretation of what was said.

As I understand it, here are the options:

1) $250 for an annual pass, which includes parking
2) $25 for a monthly pass --- unlimited launches for 30 days, parking costs extra
3) $80 for a booklet of 20 launch passes --- does not include parking
4) $10 to launch 1 or 2 kayaks --- includes parking for 1 vehicle
5) $5 to launch, which does not include parking

For now, some person is supposed to man the booth during the day, but I'm certain nobody will be there if you launch at a typical (early) fishing time. Supposedly, there will soon be a self-pay station, like what you'd see at a state park.

Since I park on the street, I got the booklet of 20 for $80. They said that I was the first person to purchase it.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Thanks for the info JeremyHillaryBoob,PhD.  I think $10 for parking and launch a kayak there is reasonable price.

I hope the Port lets us know soon what happens when we show up before there's any official in the booth or near the ramps.   I don't want to chance a fat parking ticket for not feeding the meter or a fine for when they see me land midday without a permit.  And I don't want to have to drive to the other side to the Harbormaster's Office then double back to the ramps.

I also followed up on the launching situation a few days ago. Thinking there will be 2013 kayak launch fees, I thought I would just buy the Cartop annual pass, which in 2012 was $137.50 and included parking. The Harbormaster emailed me the 2013 fees (see attachment), and the Cartop pass is now $250, an 82% increase! The trailer boat annual pass has also gone up, from $275 to $350, a 27% increase. Why such a difference in fee increases? They're targeting the human powered craft, and admit so in the Jan. 2013 Port Comm minutes ( see item#11 in the attachment). There are no Port Comm. meeting minutes posted for Feb/March/April on their website, so info is hard to come by. The Feb/March Newsletters has generic info. There is a Special Port Comm. Public meeting scheduled for Thursday April 18th at 10:30 am (while most have to work), but no agenda is posted. My Thursday's are booked so I cannot attend.
I don't mind paying to launch, but an 82% increase is excessive. I'll try to get more info.
