Kayaking next to Kilauea lava flow

I don't know if anybody has posted this already but it's pretty cool!  I mean hot!

Get too close and the yak will melt out from under you -- then you'll be in hot water (literally)

Without a doubt one of the dumbest moves i have seen in my life.  The Lava at kilaea is notorius for giving off sulfer, sulfer dioxide and other wonderful toxins.  The Lava Shelf is prone to breaking off without warning and can have one of two things happen depending on the size of the break: a small tsunami or pull what ever is near down with it if that object is too close.  When I was there a few years ago a park ranger told they lost a family when a break occured.  Other than that it was cool.

And on their next adventure riding 8 ft SIK's they chum the water and do slow Eskimo rolls  to get underwater shots of GWS's feeding 

glad they got away without injury. Cool vantage point to take vid from. I love the color of the lava as it drips into the sea.

but yeah, reminds me of how folks in AK would want to paddle right up next to the small tidewater glaciers. A small calving piece of ice is like a bowling ball with edges and easily punches through kayaks, heads, helmets, not to mention the wave it creates in 30 degree water.  This lava paddling looks similar in risk, but instead of freezing you would be boiling.

Doesn't that remind you of when you slip out from the "to do" list and when launching you know you will be in hot water when you return home.

Fearless Pedro Oliva, from Brazil, paddled within feet of the red-hot lava flows pouring down from Kilauea volcano, on the island of Hawaii (Big Island). But as if that wasn't enough, he decided to get out and explore the expanding coastline - on foot, setting fire to the paddle. Wearing white sunglasses to protect him from the lavas glare, Pedro walked on recently cooled flows which rapidly expand the islands size. Carrying his kayak and oar on his shoulder, he nonchalantly posed for photos - even taking time to drink a can of drink. Pedro was part of an expedition to explore some of Hawaii's lesser known kayaking routes with Chris Korbulic and Ben Stookesberry. They were filming the latest leg of TV program Kaiak, an adventure kayak series aired on Brazilian channel Canal Off. During the trip the team explored four islands - Big Island, Maui, Kauai, and Oahu - scouting over 300 waterfalls and rivers.
