Mahi Mahi and I left Ukiah at O-Dark-thirty. and Jammed to Caspar.  We were in the water around 7:30 with my 1st hook up about five minutes after launch.  I caught a nice Verm., and several cab's but they were small.  I then caught a few blacks.  Ran into Joe, and he took us over to a good spot.  The swells were growing big, and Mahi Mahi and I were turning a nice shade of green..  I caught a few lings, but they were under sized.  We met up with a few friends and the TYPICAL happened.  Jim was in the water about five minutes, and on his second drop he hooked into a monster ling.  He brought it it and it was a rough measure of 35+ inches.

It was a nice day in Caspar.....at first. Once motion sickness feeling started creeping up, I started longing for dry land.

I ended up hooking up about 10 fish and since it was my first rock fishing expedition, I couldn't tell you what they all were.

Andy and I hooked up with bluefin17 (Joe) and got a nice briefing on where to go. I first started trolling for salmon, but the swells were fairly large and since the fog was still around and Andy was handing closer in fishing for rocks, I headed back in. At one point we did get into a large school of blues (that's what Joe called them) and made several hook-ups. I broke off my lure a couple of times, and that is all it took to turn me light green. Over all it was a good day.

I think next time we'll hit somewhere else. I snapped a photo of Andy when he was hooked-up with the big one that got away.

Hey Kickin Bass and MahiMahi, great to meet and fish with you guys.  Wish the fishing and swells could have been better.  I caught just about every species out there, including blacks, blues, gophers, copper, chinas, black and yellows and a just legal cabezon (beautiful red color) which I released.  One fish missng from the list was lingcod, which eluded me today along with any quality on the rockfish.  Maybe we should try somewhere else and when the swell dies, try down a little deeper (around 100-130) and the quality will pick up.  Caspar is a great place when you can't get out on the outside. Post in the hookup section and I'll try to meet up with you guys next time.  I still can't believe the ling that Jim hooked up on in only 20 feet, not even 100 yards out from the beach.

That ling was 36" long and it had a 15" rockfish in its gut....  Darin will email me or Sean the pics for down load on a later date.   GALD  to meet you Joe, regardless of what you said about Sean.

Ha ha KICKIN BASS,
I owe Sean too much to ever say anything but good things about.  Can't wait to have him out there to show us how its done.  Wow, we should have used some of our rockfish for bait!!! That was definitely a fish to remember on opening day. Lets see the pics!!

Hi, guys

I was there July-3 from 7-10:30 AM. Ocean condition was not as good as July-1. I tried going out, but swells were big. I decided to duck in the cove for safety. I caught 2 cab, 1 red and 3 gophers and a few blues in ~2 hours. I would hope to meet some of you there. I could not make it in July-1. Caspar is a cool place to fish.   :smt008

The shorebreak in caspar was a little deceiving. When I came back, I thought it was not a big deal. Two breaks in row pushed me off yak and I rolled. I lost a net and a crater.   :smt010 Next time I would be more careful. :smt009

One of our team flipped on the way out and I started to roll on the way in but I bailed off to find myself in about 2 ft of water.  Nothing lost!  knock on wood!!!!

Caspar is a nice place to go. Andy and I used to ab dive there years ago when we lived in Fort Bragg. I've seen some large fish come out of that cove. None that I've landed, but I bare witness.
